    Forming and maintaining cross-cultural interorganisational networks

    This research addresses the problem: How do cross-cultural influences affect interorganisational formation and maintenance international business networks? In particular, the two concepts of stages of network development and psychic distance in partner selection are explored. A partnership between educational institutions and small and medium enterprises in developing trade relationships in the Asia Pacific region are analysed is analysed in depth. This cross-cultural business network did not appear to develop through clearly defined, predictable stages and all dimensions of culture appeared to consistently influence the networks' development. It seems that personal and business networks are important for both partners (not only for Chinese Malaysians) but if these networks are not consciously linked or expanded jointly, very little basis for cross-cultural understanding is built. An investment in a cross-cultural network should be a multi-faceted and long term financial, organisational and personal investment, which will have to change in ways that are difficult to forecast except to say that they will be needed if the network is not to eventually die

    Integrating Organisational Change Management and Customer Relationship Management in a Casino

    This research aims to solve the problem: how can casinos manage organizational change programs, and internal and external customer relationship management (CRM) programs? To find a solution, it uses two stages of qualitative methods: convergent interviewing and case research about four departments of a casino in Australia. After a thorough data analysis of documents and interview data, 12 themes were identified and they led to the development of a model of how organizational change management and CRM can be integrated to improve initiatives in organisations such as casinos. The model has seven core elements: vision, key challenge, objective, measure, strategy, initiative and outcome. A contribution is the development of this evidence-based model of links between the both types of CRM and organisational change management, with an action checklist for managers. Analytic generalisation beyond the research setting was done in this research, but more external validation could be done in future research. Managers could use the checklist of actions about this research\u27s integrated model, to reduce the high failure rate of change initiatives

    Mental Skills Usage Among Collegiate Track and Field Throwers

    The purpose of this study was to examine how often collegiate track and field throwers use goal setting, imagery, and arousal management. The second purpose was to determine if there was a significant difference between mental skills usage in practice and competition. The Test of Performance Strategies was administered to 50 collegiate track and field throwers. First, it was hypothesized that less than 20% of the participants would use mental skills very often and that the majority would report using mental skills in either moderate or low amounts. Results indicated goal setting and relaxation in practice were the only two skills highly used by less than 20% of the sample. Therefore, results do not fully support the first hypothesis. Secondly, it was hypothesized that collegiate track and field throwers would report using each mental skill more often during competition than during practice. Paired samples t-tests revealed a significantly greater use of goal setting, imagery, and relaxation more often in competition than in practice

    Effective marketing of high-rise luxury condominiums in a middle-income country like Sri Lanka

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to develop an effective process to market high-rise luxury condominiums in a middle-income country in Asia like Sri Lanka, based on empirical evidence. Design/methodology/approach - The case research methodology used to address the four research issues used multiple sources of data. In stage 1, qualitative data were collected in interviews with managers and salespersons of six condominium developments that ranged from successful to failure. In stage 2, quantitative data were collected in a survey of the buyers of the six cases. Findings - The authors contributions to knowledge include the first evidence-based findings about what influences the success and failure of high-rise luxury condominium developments in a country like Sri Lanka. In addition, a comprehensive marketing model of an effective marketing process is developed for forward-thinking professionals in the field to use to successfully market their luxury high-rise condominiums projects in the future. Practical implications - Detailed steps for successful marketing are outlined, from the Board of Management down to salespersons. Originality/value - This is the first academic research paper to examine the effective marketing of high-rise luxury condominiums in a middle-income country like Sri Lanka

    Rhabdomyosarcoma with epithelioid morphology: A challenging cytologic diagnosis in a pleural effusion

    Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) are rare malignant skeletal muscle tumors that present more commonly in pediatric populations. The WHO currently classifies RMS into four types, embryonal, alveolar, pleomorphic, and spindle cell/sclerosing variants. Epithelioid rhabdomyosarcoma (EpiRMS) is another rare, recently described subtype of RMS presenting in older patients with a male predominance and has a rapidly progressive clinical course with frequent metastases. EpiRMS closely mimics poorly differentiated carcinoma or melanoma, demonstrating discohesive large epithelioid cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, frequent glassy cytoplasmic inclusions, large vesicular nuclei, and prominent nucleoli. We present a case of metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma with features reminiscent of EpiRMS presenting as a pleural effusion, closely followed by an inguinal lymph node biopsy. The malignant cells in the pleural fluid were diffusely positive for desmin, negative for MyoD1, myogenin, S100 and SOX10, and retained INI-1 expression. Subsequent lymph node biopsy demonstrated identical malignant epithelioid cells that were positive for desmin, myoD1 and myogenin, and a cytological diagnosis of metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma, favor epithelioid rhabdomyosarcoma was given considering the concurrent lymph node biopsy morphology and immunoprofile. A diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma, though rare and challenging, should not be overlooked when considering malignant cells with an epithelioid morphology in cytology specimens

    Using accelerated, whole-of-brain learning techniques in higher education: principles and practice

    Accelerated learning is an integrative method of learning, combining both sides of the brain to strengthen a student\u27s relationship with self, teacher, subject matter and other students, and so assists students to achieve deep, rather than surface, learning. While the approach has been used to teach school pupils and trainees in the corporate world, its use in marketing education in universities is limited, and there are no reports of studies focusing on its use in postgraduate coursework degrees. Thus this paper examines how accelerated learning could be used in teaching marketing at universities at the MBA level. Some techniques are synthesised from the literature that are particularly appropriate for the students and constraints of an MBA program in a university. We conclude that accelerated learning techniques can be used and are effective in a MBA program. Essentially, accelerated learning incorporate many, already known ideas but it is a useful comprehensive framework.<br /

    Using action research in business: developing new practical framework of financial planning process for a franchise system.

    Franchising is the fastest growing method of doing business these days, however, there is little academic research to guide or regulate industry practices. Thus, this research investigated the financial planning process in developing a new franchise system. This study used action research methodology to develop a new practical framework of financial planning for a new franchise system within the Malaysian government department franchise regulators. Three main action research cycles were conducted with three new franchise systems seeking to register with the Registrar of Franchise Malaysia (ROF). To triangulate the findings of the action research, the researcher also presented them at a National Franchise Workshop (NFW). These activities showed that the process of financial planning for a new franchise system should comprise 14 elements with specific linkages. These practical frameworks for financial planning in a new franchise system were adopted by the ROF to be used as guideline in the process of developing a new franchise system and serve as evaluation tools for franchise registration

    This article presents an overview of undergraduate rehabilitation education (URE) and the movement toward accreditation. Tracing the history of URE from the earliest days of rehabilitation education programs up to the present, this review discusses the purposes of URE, traditional URE program curricula, where URE graduates have been (and are being) employed, and the relationship between UREs and graduate rehabilitation counseling programs. The article also explains the development of URE curriculum and program standards, the development of a registry of qualified URE programs, and the transition to accreditation of URE programs in the United States. The purposes of accreditation are described, along with the advantages that accreditation offers to URE programs, their students, and to persons with disabilities
